I recently photographed a new 81-unit housing development in Paso Robles for a local San Luis Obispo architecture firm, Arris Studio Architects. Sitting on almost 7 acres, it was developed by the SLO Housing Authority and was designed by Steve Rigor and Thom Jess at Arris Studio Architects to provide residents with a 100% affordable housing opportunity. Just off South River Road, it offers great views of Paso Robles and is a short walk to several shopping centers.

My old friend from high school, Jack Shimko, contacted me recently about supporting the fight against cancer. A few years ago he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, just days after his 29th birthday. Fortunately, he’s in remission and has elected to help raise money for the fight against cancer by solo paddling long-distances along the California coast. Last year, he solo paddled 160-miles from Santa Barbara to Newport Beach and this year he attemped a 260-mile solo paddle from Point Conception to Newport beach via all eight Channel Islands. His team had a couple logistical hurdles early on and I was called at the last minute to provide additional boat support. These are a few photos I took on the 50-mile leg from Santa Cruz Island to San Nicolas Island. Needless to say, Jack is an amazing survivor and athlete with unyielding determination and grit, and has inspired those around him to join together to fight against cancer. After Lou finished getting a few water shots over the Santa Cruz Basin, I told him the water depth...nearly 6000-feet!

After the conditions reach a certain point, Jack has to transition onto his prone paddleboard.

Jack averages about 3-4 knots on his prone paddleboard as Santa Cruz Island slowly fades away.

Target!! It was great to work for the Target Corporation and their property development architects and have the opportunity to photograph the exterior of their new store in San Luis Obispo. It’s just across the street from the New Frontiers Market that I photographed awhile ago on Los Osos Valley Road.

Destination Wedding: Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

I was talking with my older and much wiser sister the other day and she pointed out an ironic twist in my life. She reminded me of an article I was interviewed for after I traveled to Indonesia filming professional surfers and then on to China filming a BASE jumping documentary. It concluded with the question, “Is there anything you don’t shoot?” Without hesitation, I responded, “Weddings…I don’t shoot weddings. They’re way too stressful.”

What’s changed since then? I got married. So I thought to myself, MAYBE I could shoot a wedding. A couple months later I was asked if I would shoot a wedding in the Bahamas….and again without hesitation, I responded, “A wedding in the Bahamas? Of course!” I’m now oddly drawn to the crazy, stressful, one-chance opportunity to capture some of the most important moments in a couple’s life. Obviously, I was a bit nervous as it was my first wedding as the official photographer, but after 5 days and over 6,000 photos, I knew I captured some incredible shots. However, I cannot take all the credit. I would not have survived without my wife, Katie – a.k.a my assistant, second shooter, time-manager, sherpa, nutrition consultant, sunscreener, pep talker, group-shot coordinator, airplane-pillow, and bug repeller. My own little photo tribute to the 10x ASP World Champion, Mr. Kelly Slater – aka Slates, SL8R, the Michael Jordan of Surfing, Freak Show, King Kelly… Anyways, these photos I took down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente during the 2008 Boost Mobile Pro. I was hoping Taj would beat Kelly in the final, but Kelly came up with the win in the last minute for a huge 1st place prize of $75,000. To see more photos from that contest, please click here.

About a week ago I photographed the new Charles Paddock Zoo building for the local San Luis Obispo architecture firm, Ravatt Albrecht & Associates. It’s a beautiful new building that is a fresh and welcome addition to our Central Coast zoo. If you’ve never been to the Charles Paddock Zoo, it’s a great hidden gem with more animals that you might think. The Director, Alan Baker, and his staff continually impress their guests with the abundance of education and great displays. The lemurs are hilarious.

A couple weeks ago I photographed a home addition and a new barn designed by Bill Isaman. Located near Avila Beach, the home has remarkable views that were punctuated by the abnormal hail storm passing through that day.

A couple weeks ago I photographed this gorgeous home in Santa Margarita for the designer, Bill Isaman., and contractor, Mark Sullivan. The interior was exceptionally clean, well decorated, and had a style that I truly enjoyed shooting. The backyard has a great outdoor space with wide-open views of the Santa Margarita hills.

I recently photographed a new custom home in Arroyo Grande located in the new development, Las Ventanas. The views from this property are some of the best I’ve seen in the county. The home has several patios and decks providing warm and comfortable spaces to relax and enjoy the view. It’s surrounded by oak trees and sits atop a hill with wildlife running all over the place. It was a challenge to photograph the exterior due to the slope it’s on, but from a plane it was a bit easier…

Last week I photographed a new home on the beach in Cayucos for Isaman Design Inc. The lot size demands an efficient use of space and upon entering you immediately notice that successful element. The homeowners built a number of interior fixtures themselves such as the bamboo staircase and red-tiled bench seats which add a warm personal touch. An centrally located elevator provides access to all three stories and add to the space-saving design. A couple footsteps to a beautiful Central Coast beach…I would absolutely LOVE to live here.
